EDM relies on spark erosion between an electrode and workpiece. For mid-sized components (e.g., turbine housings, mold cavities), 300mm graphite electrodes offer critical advantages: their size reduces the need for segmented electrodes, minimizing assembly time and error. A single 300mm electrode can machine a cavity 250mm deep, whereas smaller electrodes would require multiple setups, increasing labor and cost.
Graphite's high electrical conductivity ensures efficient spark generation, while its low melting point (~3,600℃) enables fast material removal. A 300mm graphite electrode erodes hardened steel 2–3x faster than a copper electrode of the same size, with its brittleness allowing intricate details (down to 10 μm) without burrs. Post-processing is simplified: graphite's low adhesion to metal residues reduces cleaning time.
Material quality is paramount. Premium 300mm EDM electrodes use ultra-fine-grain graphite (particle size < 5 μm) for uniform spark distribution, with impurities (sulfur, iron) controlled below 0.1% to prevent arcing issues. In aerospace component machining, a 300mm graphite electrode with 99.9% purity achieves tolerances of ±0.05 mm, meeting strict industry standards.
